Chained by chagrin.

The word chagrin,
"is used to explain strong feelings disquietude or distress of mind caused by humiliation, disappointment, or failure."

This past weekend, HippieHusband and I ran into several faculty from SmallUniversity. I would say the word chagrined defined how they acted.
