scoopage

Being scooped sucks. Just learned that an experiment I am in the process of finishing has already been done by another group who has the manuscript in review at a high level journal. Sheesh. Maybe this will be salvageable somehow...

How much overlap is the scoop? From what you're saying it sounds like it's just one experiment. I know it's not ideal, but at least you can use that to validate your findings.... :(

Btw, how high of a journal were you planning on getting into originally? If you were shooting middle tier you're probably OK....

@Dr.Dad, PhD

Well I've written the authors to ask for a copy of the manuscript. Apparently it is now in press so I think they will be okay with me seeing it. And yes, you're right, I can definitely use it to validate my findings.

I was originally planning to submit it to a journal of the same level but now I think middle tier is where it will have to go. As you said, it's not ideal. But it is what it is. At least I'm not out to lunch on my ideas!

Scoopage most certainly sucks. But on the bright side, it means you were onto something!

That sucks. It happened to me twice in grad school.

The first time was not unexpected (I knew other groups were working on it), but might have gotten me something small in a low impact journal. I still included it in my thesis. Unfortunately postdocs do not even get this booby-prize!

The other experiment I was scooped on took some of the novelty out of my paper, but at the same time strengthened my story. I hope it works out ok for you too.
