The Value of Science in Canada: An Open Letter

I guess our good Minister of Science and Technology, Gary Goodyear, was wrong when he said, in the March 2 issue of the Globe and Mail that his governement critics are few.

Now, I know that we all get confused with our greater than > and less than < signs, but here's a little mnemonic to help you remember, Gary:

"a few" < 2100 Alligator wants to eat 2100, so "a few" is less than 2100.

2100 > "a few" Alligator wants to eat 2100, so "a few" is less than 2100.

Thanks to Sandwalk for first posting a link to the open letter written to the Prime Minister and the two opposition leaders. Add your name to the list of 2100 Canadian researchers to protest the recent cuts to our tri-councils: NSERC, CIHR, and SSHRC. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, you can read the backstory in one of my previous blogs.

I noticed that all the signatories are Phd. Can grad students and non-researchers sign the letter?

ScientistMother: I noticed that myself and wondered if the published list was just PhDs. But you can send them an email at:

concerned.researchers@gmail.com

I've tried to find out that information myself.

Mr. Goodyear has done it again, that man just does not understand science and nothing that even near anything scientific (kind of strange considering he's a chiropractor (NOT a doctor, thank god)). I wish we had someone less ignorant and a little more open to the values of science in his position. Well, we can just hope the next election will bring a change in that and hope scientists won't die out in Canada till then.

Take care, Elli
